Would you like to have another discussion about the church?

The Kingdom of God is supposed to be so incredibly counter culture… why does the American church feel it needs to wear a costume of culture to be noticed?

Thanks,
Grace

    Hey there Gracie Poo!

Sorry it’s taken me so long to respond, it’s been a crazy month..haha!

The reasons why the Church feels the need to dress itself up in culture in order to be noticed or feel relevant is multi-faceted to be sure; however, here are some of my thoughts.

The first thing that comes to my mind is that we react in this way as the church because it is the way that we are taught as individuals (from adolesence to act). We are taught and experience that if you want to be liked and listened to then there is a certain persona that you need to uphold. No one respects or wants to be around the freak.

In my own opinion, in our attempt to get as far away as we can from anything churchy (hymns, evangelistic sermons, revivals, christianese, etc.) and become as culturally relevant as we can (dawning the church-hipster garb of skinny jeans, square glasses, a coffee cup in hands at all times, and making social justice our focus) we have really just rendered ourselves irrelevant period. How can we stand out when we look just like everyone else? How can we claim that we have something special to offer when we just want to be like everyone else and we live as though the only special thing we have to offer is our cool clothes and catchy sermon series and graphics.

    Thoughts… :)
